We are incredibly excited to announce that Olivia and Wyatt are going to have a little brother or sister in early December! This is a time of immense joy for our family but also a time of sadness of what could have been if we had not lost our beautiful daughter to brain cancer 7 months ago.
Having another baby after the tragic loss of Olivia brings up a lot of fears. What if this baby gets cancer too? Or diabetes, like Wyatt? Or what if this baby is sick with something else? Losing a child and watching them suffer will forever change the way we think about everything. It is truly a case of post traumatic stress disorder. The normal fears a parent has for each of their children is amplified to something much greater and more intense. And our fears are anything but unfounded.
However, despite our deep-rooted fears, we go forth with a lot of joy and trust in God. We pray for the health of our unborn baby and thank God for this opportunity to be parents to yet another beautiful child. And we know that Olivia will be looking down on Wyatt and her new sibling each and every day, keeping them safe and loving them from afar.
Olivia Caldwell Foundation is a pending 501c3 nonprofit that raises money for pediatric brain cancer research in honor of Olivia Caldwell, who passed away after a long battle with an astrocytoma in October 2013. All proceeds benefit the neuro-oncology research lab at Children’s Hospital Colorado. You can learn more and donate at www.oliviacaldwellfoundation.org.
Congratulations to your family! Six months after losing my five year old son, Anthony, to leukemia I got pregnant again. It was a bittersweet experience but so incredibly healing. I hate the myth that says a bereaved mother should not have more children…in fact it was the inspiration for me to publish my first book. You have an incredible journey ahead of you. Congratulations. xoxo Shannon Harris
